Air in Sarajevo Canton of variable quality, highest PM10 concentrations in Ilijaš

(Patria) - As in previous days, the air in Sarajevo Canton is of variable quality today.

In the morning and evening, due to the presence of temperature inversion, lack of wind, and cooling, there is a concentration of suspended particles, while during the day, due to rising temperatures, sunshine, and southern winds, the inversion layer breaks up and the situation improves.

Of course, warm weather affects the reduction of heating of buildings, which also has an effect on air quality, explained the Center for Air Quality Management of the relevant cantonal ministry.

According to them, the worst situation is in the municipality of Ilijaš, and the causes of this situation are the geographical specificity of the Ilijaš basin, as well as the industry present in this municipality, but also emissions from domestic hearths and other local sources.

Also, the air quality is worse at the Otoka measuring station, where, in addition to suspended particles, nitrogen dioxide is occasionally recorded to be exceeded due to increased traffic density, the Center points out.

They also announce that the PM10 measuring analyzer in Hadžići is expected to be operational by the end of the day, after a multi-day interruption, so citizens can monitor the values of this pollutant in addition to other pollutants.

Given this assessment of air quality, the KS Public Health Institute recommends vulnerable population groups to reduce their outdoor activity in the early morning and night hours, as well as to apply personal protective measures.

As for the meteorological forecast, similar weather conditions will persist for the next 48 hours, and therefore, fluctuations in air quality are expected in the Canton.

The Center and the relevant ministry once again appeal to all legal and natural persons to adhere to regulations and not to further endanger air quality with their actions, in the interest of the health of the population and guests staying in our city.
