High Representative Not Elected: Germans, French and British Against Americans, New Attempt at End of June

(Patria) - The Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) did not elect a new High Representative at today's session, a successor to Christian Schmidt, who recently resigned under US pressure.

This issue is expected to be reconsidered at the end of the month, writes Istraga.ba.

The candidate who was given the greatest chances of being elected today, the American favorite Antonio Zanardi Landi, arrived in Sarajevo this morning. However, things became complicated due to opposition from some European countries.

Information obtained by Istraga indicates that the Germans, French and British demanded at the session that the election of the High Representative be postponed until the end of the month.

At the same time, the Americans insisted that Landi be elected today, which his arrival indirectly confirmed.

Today's session was interrupted at one point, with talks continuing at the level of the foreign ministers of France and Italy, the countries that put forward their candidates.

France's candidate is Rene Troccaz, who also has the support of Germany. Istraga sources claim that the British also supported the positions of the French and Germans before the session.

Their delegation stated that it is necessary to have consensus regarding the new High Representative, and that this consensus must be, above all, among European countries. Thus, the British effectively undermined the American candidate Landi.

The Italian delegation emphasized that it maintains its position that Antonio Zanardi Landi must be the High Representative. They stated that he is a diplomat with extensive experience who served as an advisor to two Italian presidents.
