(Patria) - The University of Sarajevo today promoted 43 candidates to the degree of Doctor of Science.
At the ceremony in the National Theatre, the Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Tarik Zaimović, vice-rectors of the University of Sarajevo, and deans of the faculties promoted six candidates to the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences, four candidates each to the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Doctor of Social Sciences, and Doctor of Health Sciences.
Three candidates were promoted to the degree of Doctor of Law, two candidates each to the degree of Doctor of Administrative Sciences, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Doctor of Linguistic Sciences, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, and Doctor of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, and one candidate each to the degree of Doctor of Islamic Sciences, Doctor of Literary History, Doctor of Educational Sciences, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Doctor of Physics, Doctor of Biology, Doctor of Mathematics, and Doctor of Social/Humanities Sciences, field of Educational Sciences and Pedagogy.
Addressing the attendees, the Speaker of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly, Elvedin Okerić, emphasized that the University of Sarajevo is the foundation of our academic, social, and cultural identity, and that the Sarajevo Canton, as its founder, is dedicated to creating conditions in which education and science can freely grow, develop, and contribute to the progress of society as a whole.
- Investing in knowledge and science is not an expense but the wisest investment in the future. Today's event once again confirms the commitment and capability of the University of Sarajevo to create new generations of intellectuals who will analytically and critically reflect on contemporary challenges, advance their fields, and develop science, acting in the service of the public good.
Your success today is not just your personal achievement. By this act, you become holders of the highest academic title, but also bear the responsibility to apply your knowledge with integrity, courage, and for the benefit of the society you belong to and your country, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Today, on one hand, we are living through the so-called fourth industrial revolution, an era of modern technology characterized by extremely rapid changes. Without education and science, we cannot adequately keep pace with these changes, let alone participate in them.
On the other hand, our country does not have a high percentage of highly educated people. It is twice as low as in some neighboring countries and three times lower than the standard we strive for. That is why the symbolism of today and your promotion is particularly significant - said Okerić.
He added that the Sarajevo Canton remains a strong partner of UNSA.
- We remain politically committed and persistent in fostering the development of education and science through support for the development of scientific research activities, improving student standards, and strengthening institutional autonomy.
We believe in education as the pillar of a democratic society and want a university that is free, open, and modern. In this spirit, I congratulate all of you on this exceptional achievement and thank you for bringing new value to our society and faith in a better tomorrow - concluded Okerić.
Rector Zaimović stated that obtaining a doctorate is not just an academic achievement – it is a turning point in one's personal and professional journey. It is an entry into the world of independent research, critical thinking, and free intellectual expression.
- But this freedom does not come without obligation. It implies moral and social responsibility, because science without an understanding of broader social responsibility can become a destructive force. Science and our relationship with society must be inseparable, and knowledge must serve humanity and never be directed against it.
Therefore, you are expected not only to be bearers of knowledge but also the critical conscience of the community to which you belong – to advocate for the values of humanism, an inclusive society, justice, and truth – even when it involves stepping out of the comfort zone of academic comfort within a closed circle of scientific discourse and the immediacy of research results - said Rector Zaimović.
The Rector extended his sincerest congratulations to the doctoral candidates on this exceptional success.
- This is a success for your families, your mentors, but also for our University. We oblige you to incorporate your knowledge and experience into the well-being of your community and society as a whole. I wish you much success and happiness, both professionally and personally - concluded Zaimović.
