(Patria) - According to information that High Representative in BiH Christian Schmidt will soon step down, based on his work and engagement, and even the very purpose of his mission which has been decided from the beginning in the interest of HDZ BiH and Zagreb, it is certain that Christian Schmidt could, at the last moment, before his departure, impose changes to the election law and the method of electing members of the BiH Presidency.
This would be a move technically similar to the move by Valentin Inzko, who at the last moment imposed the Law on the Prohibition of Genocide Denial and left Bosnia and Herzegovina, handing over the role of High Representative to Christian Schmidt.
However, the consequences are brutal. This move, which Christian Schmidt is likely preparing for the end of his engagement in BiH, would annul the Dayton Peace Agreement and return Bosnia and Herzegovina to a state of war, although Schmidt and official Zagreb expect Bosniaks, and all other state-loyal citizens, to peacefully accept the imposed words on paper that do not reflect the reality of forces on the ground.
Christian Schmidt's logic is deeply condescending. However, there are arguments for condescension as well, given that Schmidt has imposed changes twice without causing unrest in BiH. The first time, Schmidt imposed changes regarding the election of delegates on election night, practically from an ambush. The second time, Schmidt imposed the government in FBiH in April 2023.
The fact that the ground is being prepared for the destruction of Dayton and the return of Bosnia and Herzegovina to a state of war is also evidenced by Čović's self-confidence regarding constitutional changes (in the way HDZ BiH and Zagreb want).
Čović stated just a few days ago that resolving the constitutional arrangement of BiH is key, and the Election Law is only a part of it.
- We don't have the two-thirds majority needed for constitutional changes. We are looking for a partner for this, I think we have found one, and we are working carefully with that partner, said Čović.
The partner with whom they are working carefully is none other than Christian Schmidt. It is true that among the parties in Sarajevo there are those willing to accept the imposed situation, but it is equally true that these parties do not have the courage to commit treason against the state in the BiH Parliament, in front of the public and the people. That is why Christian Schmidt is the careful partner.
Attention should also be paid to the choice of words used by Dragan Čović. It is the spirit of the words spoken by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, before Schmidt's imposition on election night in 2022.
“Are we talking to Christian Schmidt? Yes. It would be grotesque if the Croatian government did not talk to the High Representative in such circumstances in order to correct the injustice towards Croats,” said Plenković.
On that occasion, he expressed support for Borjana Krišto in the race for the BiH Presidency and added that nothing is over yet and that there is time until Sunday for the High Representative's decision on amending the Election Law to be imposed.
With this, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia encouraged Christian Schmidt to impose the method of electing delegates to the House of Peoples. Now, in addition to Dragan Čović, new encouragements for Schmidt are coming from the Republic of Croatia with the aim of imposing the election law.
Appearing on the TV Herceg-Bosne program, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, Miro Kovač, openly suggests the imposition of the election law.
“Here, let the High Representative bring it, we won't complain. Here, Schmidt is allegedly leaving. What do you think, will he have the strength to make such a decision on his way out?” the host of the show “Kompas” asked Miro Kovač.
“I don't know until when Schmidt, whom I have known and respected for a long time, will be in the position of High Representative, but I personally would like Mr. Schmidt to leave something as his legacy, to resolve the election law, to use all his powers and resolve it, and to finally correct the injustice done to Croats because there was not enough caution when negotiating this, because it was believed that no one would abuse it. It would be more than correct, and it is time for it to happen,” said Kovač.
At this point, there is no room to extensively refute Kovač's ridiculous thesis that Franjo Tuđman was not cautious at Dayton when discussing the method of electing the sovereign (the main thing) in BiH. Tuđman was more than cautious, but Croatia was the one that lost the war in BiH. Christian Schmidt is now trying to retroactively bring them victory.
The realization of this would also be the realization of the “tripartite agenda,” according to which Croats get the election law, Serbs get state property (which is also certain in exchange for SNSD's de-escalation of political circumstances), and Bosniaks get, or have already received, the Law on the Prohibition of Genocide Denial, or a wooden medal as a sign of humiliation and loss of the state in peacetime.
It remains for the Bosniak and pro-Bosnian public to decide whether they will remain passive observers of their own downfall.
