(Patria) - One of the demands of the student protests following the tram accident in which 23-year-old student of the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Sarajevo, Erdoan Morankić, from Brčko, lost his life, was the appointment of management structures of the Public Institution Student Center and the resolution of all problems in the functioning of this institution, as well as the undertaking of all measures to protect students and repair the boiler room in Dom Bjelave.
The Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton published a public call for the appointment of the president and members of the Supervisory Board of the Public Institution "Student Center" Sarajevo on February 18, 2026.
The Government of Sarajevo Canton, at its session on March 5, made a decision on the appointment of the Commission for the selection and appointment of the president and members of the Supervisory Board of this institution. Appointed to the Commission for the selection and appointment of the president and members of the Supervisory Board of the Public Institution "Student Center" Sarajevo are: Dženita Viteškić, president, Azemina Njuhović, member, Mersiha Kolčaković, member, Abid Fejzić, member, and Lamija Husić, member.

On Thursday, March 19, the Prosecutor's Office of Sarajevo Canton announced that an indictment had been filed against 14 people in the "Envelope" case due to high corruption, and among the indicted is the assistant minister for higher education, Dženita Viteškić. She was arrested in April 2025 along with the then minister of higher education, Adna Mesihović, and Ibrahim Obhođaš. At that time, she was questioned and certain restrictive measures were imposed on her, but not a ban on performing her duties. Minister Mesihović was remanded in custody. They are suspected of illegally employing several people in the Ministry. As the investigation progressed, the web of favoritism towards Muhamed Ajanović regarding his appointment to a third term as dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of UNSA unraveled. Obhođaš is suspected of the criminal offense of receiving a gift or other benefit, i.e., for mediating in the appointment of the director of the Public Institution Student Center Sarajevo. All these processes are related to the Ministry of Higher Education.
With the filed indictment, the KS Prosecutor's Office has now requested a ban on performing the duties of assistant minister for higher education and a ban on meeting with witnesses and suspects for Dženita Viteškić.
Only after the indictment is confirmed will a hearing be held on these measures. Until then, Viteškić will obviously continue to do her job and make decisions on processes that are the subject of the investigation.
Although no one is guilty until proven guilty, the Ministry of Higher Education and the Government of Sarajevo Canton should still take into account the appointments of individuals suspected of corruption, thereby questioning their own integrity and that of the institution whose decisions they are making. Especially when it comes to the public sector, in which the public has lost trust.
