Municipality of Novi Grad issues urban planning consent for the construction of the 12th Transversal, roundabout before airport entrance

(Patria) - The Municipality of Novi Grad Sarajevo has issued urban planning consent to the Public Enterprise Roads of the Federation of BiH for the construction of a section of the XII Transversal, which passes through the Municipality of Novi Grad, from the intersection of Kenan Dubravić Street, Stupska Street, and Kurt Schork Street.

This is one of the busiest roads in the Sarajevo Canton and the Municipality of Novi Grad Sarajevo, connecting the Stupska Petlja (Stupska Loop), the Sarajevo Bypass, and Sarajevo International Airport.

According to the planning documentation, the construction of the XII Transversal with four lanes and a pedestrian path is planned, with the first phase leading from Stupska Petlja to the junction with the A Transversal, i.e., the entrance to Sarajevo International Airport, where a roundabout is planned.

This route passes through two municipalities, and the larger part is located in the Municipality of Ilidža, with the most significant structure and roundabout located in the Municipality of Novi Grad, in close proximity to TC Bingo and the KJP Park nursery, specifically at the intersection with the future Southern Longitudinal.

By expanding this road from two to four lanes, Sarajevo Airport would be better connected to the highway, as well as the A Transversal, and through it, the gravitating part of Novi Grad.

“Activities on the construction of this road are led by the Directorate of JP Roads of FBiH, and with amendments to the FBiH budget for 2023, initial funds of two million convertible marks have been secured, and the company Roads of FBiH has initiated activities, a request has been submitted, and the Municipality of Novi Grad has issued urban planning consent. It is significant that the planned roundabout location allows the connection of the XII Transversal with Aleja Bosne Srebrene Street, as well as with Stupska Street from the direction of Ilidža. These streets will connect to the roundabout. It is expected that the Municipality of Ilidža will also issue urban planning consents to the competent federal enterprise for the parts of this road passing through its territory in the shortest possible period. These are parts of the route from Stupska Petlja to TC Bingo, and the continuation between the Dobrinja River and the A Transversal,” explained the Mayor of the Municipality of Novi Grad Sarajevo, Semir Efendić.

JP Roads of the Federation of BiH has taken over the activities for the preparation of the land expropriation report and the main project, after which the resolution of property-legal relations will commence.

Roads of FBiH emphasized that after obtaining urban planning consent from the Municipality of Novi Grad for the section in this municipality, a detailed main project and expropriation report are being prepared in accordance with the spatial plan of Sarajevo Canton and the conditions from the urban planning consent (regulation of local roads). They also stated that after harmonizing the project and the report, they will submit a proposal for determining public interest, which is a prerequisite for initiating the expropriation procedure for parcels within the construction area.

They assessed that the Municipality of Novi Grad is a positive example in this case, as they have shown interest in the realization of this project, and by issuing urban planning consent, they have enabled the continuation of activities on this project.

The Cantonal Ministry of Transport and the KS Road Directorate had previously initiated activities for the construction of a roundabout at the entrance to the airport and at the junction of the XII and A Transversals, however, there have been no concrete activities on the construction of that facility so far, the construction of which would significantly improve traffic flow in this part of the Novi Grad municipality.
