Pollen monitoring in Sarajevo Canton: Fewer allergens than last year, but caution due to linden and grasses

(Patria) - The concentration of pollen in the air in the Sarajevo Canton area is generally lower than in the same period last year. However, due to the flowering of linden, grasses and weeds, caution is advised for people prone to allergies in the coming days.

The Center for Ecology and Natural Resources - "Akademik Sulejman Redžić" has submitted the latest narrative report to the Ministry of Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of Sarajevo Canton. This document provides a detailed review and analysis of the current situation and dynamics of pollen from allergenic plants in the Sarajevo Canton area.

At the Pofalići measuring station, pollen from trees (maple, horse chestnut, birch, beech, ash, walnut, pine, yew and cypress) was recorded, along with the accompanying presence of grass and weed pollen.

According to long-standing scientific knowledge and previous reports for Sarajevo Canton, the period from March to June is marked as the first annual maximum, i.e., the time of intensive appearance and release of pollen from woody plants.

The variation in pollen concentration in the air remains entirely consistent with current weather conditions. Sunny and windy periods favor the drying and easier spread of pollen grains, which implies a greater possibility of allergic reactions, while rainy days effectively "wash" the atmosphere and significantly reduce the risk for sensitive individuals.

People allergic to tree pollen are recommended to spend as much time as possible in high mountain areas, i.e., above the upper forest line.
