Two debates and two confrontations between candidates for the Mayor of Ilijaš Municipality have shown two completely different concepts, and the citizens of Ilijaš will choose on October 6th between SDA candidate Nermin Hodžić and the candidate of the 'trojka' parties, Amar Dovadžija.
While Hodžić has no political experience and enters the political arena at the age of 49, which is surprising that SDA decided on such a concept, Dovadžija has been present on the political scene for years, and after founding NIP, he moved from SDA to Elmedin Konaković's party.
In their presentations during the debate on TV Sarajevo, both Hodžić and Dovadžija briefly introduced themselves. Dovadžija exclusively highlighted his political engagement and is currently employed as an advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, leading his election campaign from this position. Hodžić, on the other hand, left his position as director of JU KSC and Radio Ilijaš to dedicate himself entirely to his political campaign.
Hodžić emphasized that he joined the Army of RBiH as a minor in 1992 and stated during the debate that he is ready to defend Bosnia and Herzegovina now, just as he did then. He has been living with his family in Lješevo near Ilijaš for the past 20 years, while Dovadžija was born in Ilijaš and spent part of his life studying abroad.
Both candidates are highly educated, but nervousness and public speaking clearly took their toll, as they made mistakes during their presentations. While Hodžić spoke more slowly and precisely, Dovadžija showed insecurity, which he sometimes tried to mask with loud speech. However, for an English language professor and someone who claims to have worked in education, his vocabulary is limited, and he even said several times that laws were 'donosivani' (brought), which Hodžić, who studied philosophy and sociology, could not let pass and corrected him, stating that laws are 'donošeni' (passed).
Dovadžija's gaffe has already gone viral, but the citizens of Ilijaš need to get to know the candidates in such situations as well, because their lives in this local community will depend on their decisions tomorrow. Dovadžija was also a candidate for Mayor of Ilijaš in the last local elections, but he was defeated by Akif Fazlić from SDA.
Dovadžija is also being helped in his campaign by his party leader Elmedin Konaković, who, at rallies, refers to Hodžić, who is only a year younger than Konaković, as a 'youngster' found by SDA. Hodžić is the father of three daughters, one of whom is a silver badge recipient from UNSA, and his other two daughters are excellent students.
During the debate, Hodžić told Dovadžija that he had never earned a salary without the budget, alluding to his long-term political engagement and changing positions. Dovadžija replied that he worked in tourism and 'drove Arabs around'. He did not clarify whether this was undeclared work or not.
It should be noted that Hodžić left public service to avoid a conflict of interest while conducting his election campaign, whereas Dovadžija left his last position as director of JU Studentski centar and was then hired by Konaković at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In a previous interview with Patria, Dovadžija announced the possibility of resignation because the KS Government was not providing enough funds for the Student Center. However, instead of trying to secure funds from the Student Center's activities, it was apparently easier to join his boss in the cabinet where funds are regular and stable from the budget, and he doesn't have to take responsibility for the employees and students residing in substandard student dormitories.
Although Hodžić may lack experience in public speaking and political struggle, it cannot be denied that during his tenure as director of KSC Ilijaš, he revitalized this local community and promoted activities that were not previously part of Ilijaš's social life, such as promotions, exhibitions, literary evenings, Ilijaš Winter, and activities for the youngest.
Hodžić's work report was supported by the Ilijaš Municipal Council as well as by NIP and SDP representatives, and when SDA announced Hodžić's candidacy, attacks on his character began.
However, on October 6th, the citizens will choose, but according to Dovadžija, 'the elections will be decided by citizens, not voters,' likely referring to the 'counters.' Nevertheless, words spoken cannot be taken back.
