Today is World Sight Day: INZ Reminds of the Importance of Preserving Vision in Children

(Patria) - On the occasion of World Sight Day, the Institute for Health and Food Safety Zenica (INZ) reminds of the importance of preserving eye health and preventing vision disorders. Vision, as one of the most important human senses, plays a key role in everyday functioning, learning, work, and the safety of every individual.

According to INZ experts, early detection of vision problems in children is crucial because this is the period when permanent habits and abilities related to learning and perception of the environment most often develop. Children with untreated vision disorders often have difficulties mastering the curriculum, concentrating, and developing fine motor skills.

The Institute's School Hygiene Service continuously conducts vision screening examinations in schools across the Zenica-Doboj Canton, with the aim of early detection and prevention of vision disorders.

Analysis of data from the period 2014–2024 shows that a total of 70,662 examinations were performed, and 5,285 children (7.5 percent, or every thirteenth child) had a positive finding, meaning they were referred for further ophthalmological evaluation and possible corrective measures.

During 2024, 5,343 children were examined, and 407 students (7.6 percent) had a positive screening result. These data indicate the persistence of the problem and the need for continuous monitoring and education of parents, teachers, and children about the importance of regular ophthalmological check-ups.

Experts from the Institute for Health and Food Safety Zenica recommend several key measures that can help preserve eye health and prevent vision damage, especially in children and young people.

Regular eye exams, proper lighting during reading and studying, use of protective glasses when working with potentially hazardous materials, and a balanced diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E and minerals such as zinc and selenium – all these are factors that contribute to healthy eyes.

It is especially recommended to limit screen time and apply the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at a distance of 20 feet (about 6 meters) for 20 seconds, which significantly reduces eye strain.

INZ emphasizes that preserving vision is not only a medical but also a social priority. Regular systematic check-ups, education of parents and schools, and raising awareness about the importance of early detection of vision problems contribute to better health of children and their more successful development.
