Borislav Gligorević Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Raping Bosniak Women in Liplje near Zvornik

(Patria) - The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina today issued a second-instance verdict sentencing Borislav Gligorević to ten years in prison for a rape committed in 1992 in Liplje near Zvornik.

The BiH Prosecutor's Office accused him of, as a member of the "White Eagles" unit, at the end of May and beginning of June 1992 in Liplje, Zvornik municipality, using force and threats with weapons, raping and sexually abusing three victims of Bosniak nationality along with other unit members.

According to the indictment, the unit he was part of illegally detained several hundred civilians of Bosniak nationality, and three victims were forcibly separated from other detainees and taken to surrounding facilities where crimes were committed against them.

The crimes, according to the indictment, occurred as part of a widespread and systematic attack on the civilian population of Bosniak nationality in the Zvornik area and its surroundings.

Gligorević was arrested by the BiH Border Police at the end of May 2023 at the border crossing with Serbia.

During the trial, which began in October 2023, more than 20 people testified, including five witnesses under protection measures, and two expert witnesses.

Gligorević was in custody following the first-instance verdict delivered on February 21 this year due to the risk of flight. The time spent in custody has been included in his sentence.

No appeal is allowed against the second-instance verdict.
