(Patria) - Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will visit Montenegro and BiH, and the German Embassy conveyed her message ahead of the visit.
"The countries of the Western Balkans are an inseparable part of our Europe. Supporting the six countries in the region with all our might on their path to the European Union has become a geopolitical necessity, at the latest in light of Russian brutal imperialism.
We cannot afford to have any grey zones anywhere in Europe and must do everything together to close all avenues that Russia can exploit for its policy of destabilization, disinformation, and infiltration. This includes supporting the Western Balkan countries in strengthening their democratic institutions, improving their resilience, and providing economic prospects for people. As the EU, we have a common homework assignment to put ourselves on the right track for the future while making more room at the European table. Only together will we succeed in laying a solid foundation for peace, freedom, and security in Europe," Baerbock emphasizes.
She states that Montenegro has been our ally in NATO for years.
"In the accession process to the EU, Montenegro has set itself an ambitious agenda and is now resolutely pursuing it again. We want to use this new momentum together and support Montenegro on its path to the EU as a close partner and good friend. In Podgorica, we will also discuss how Montenegro can make further progress in the reforms of the rule of law and in the fight against corruption and organized crime, and how we can support the country in this.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is at a crucial crossroads in the accession process. Last year, the European Council decided to open accession negotiations as soon as the criteria for doing so are met. On the path to the EU, those responsible in Sarajevo must step by step approach the necessary reforms. The adoption of the law on the prevention of money laundering and the financing of terrorism was one such European reform step. Given the October local elections, it is crucial to finalize the electoral law reform with the election process integrity package now. Free and fair elections are the foundation of a democratic society. We resolutely oppose all those who, with their secessionist fantasies, place obstacles in the path of Bosnia and Herzegovina towards the EU and question European values.“
