'Adnan's Law' Enters into Force

(Patria) - The Law on Amendments to the Law on Organ and Tissue Transplantation for Treatment Purposes, dubbed 'Adnan's Law' by the media, has entered into force.

After being unanimously adopted by the FBiH Parliament, it was signed by the President of FBiH, Lidija Bradara, reports Faktor. It was subsequently published in the Official Gazette of FBiH.

The amendments to the law also allow for organ transplantation from donors who are not related to the patient, which was not the case until now.

The changes were initiated to help 22-year-old Adnan Šemić from Mostar, who suffers from Wilson's disease and is in serious condition, requiring an urgent liver transplant.

Although he found a donor, Šemić could not undergo transplantation because the donor was not a blood relative, as stipulated by the previous law. This has now been changed.

Thanks to federal deputies Haris Šabanović and Jasmina Bišćević Tokić, the FBiH Government and the Federal Ministry of Health were engaged in recent days, leading to the amendments to the Transplantation Law being determined in a short period, enabling a non-related person to be a donor.

Dragan Mioković, Speaker of the House of Representatives of FBiH, urgently convened the Collegium and requested the Government to submit the amendments to the law for procedure. The Government did so.

Yesterday, extraordinary sessions of the House of Representatives and the House of Peoples were held, where the amendments to the law were unanimously adopted.
