(Patria) - At least 300 people have died in a powerful earthquake that struck Morocco last night. Hundreds of people were injured. The earthquake was about 6.9 on the Richter scale.
The US Geological Survey announced that this is the strongest earthquake on the African continent in the last hundred years.
The earthquake occurred in the High Atlas mountain range in Morocco shortly after 11 PM local time, at a relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers, with the epicenter 72 kilometers southwest of Marrakech.
Several buildings collapsed near the epicenter, and thousands of people have left their homes.
The tremor was also felt in the capital Rabat, about 350 kilometers north of the High Atlas mountain range.
