Publishers/Editors Association in Bosnia and Herzegovina: It is up to the authorities to resolve the status of NUB BiH as soon as possible

(Patria) - The Publishers/Editors Association in Bosnia and Herzegovina has issued a statement regarding the renewed suspension
of the National and University Library of BiH, questioning whether the pillars of our cultural identity are crumbling.

"In light of the alarming situation surrounding the renewed suspension of the National and University Library of Bosnia and
Herzegovina, the Publishers/Editors Association in Bosnia and Herzegovina calls for urgent action from the authorities to save one of the most important institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina's cultural heritage. The current situation, which includes a lack of management structure and financial resources for its operation, as well as promises and solutions that have only 'put out fires,' represents a systemic problem in the approach to culture and education in BiH.

NUB BiH plays a vital role in enabling the proper registration and distribution of new publications, which is of fundamental importance to every publisher. Aware of the dangers of lacking a stable and professional environment that allows for the development of literature and the promotion of cultural diversity, we demand a systemic solution to the status of NUB BiH. We appeal to all levels of government to urgently resolve its status, establish the necessary management structure, and ensure stable funding that will enable its normal operation.

Placing NUB BiH in the BiH budget proposal under the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH resolves accumulated financial and legal problems that have existed for almost 30 years. We are certain that the funds for financing the operation of NUB BiH are negligible for any level of government, and at the same time, they would resolve one of the most important issues concerning the statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The weakening of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina represents a serious blow not only to the country's cultural heritage but also to the very essence of Bosnia and Herzegovina's identity.

This institution is not just an archive of literary treasures, but also a key place for preserving and promoting the cultural, historical, and educational resources that shape our social reality. NUB BiH must remain functional, not only as a guardian of the past but also as an active participant in shaping the future of culture and education in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We believe and expect that the competent authorities have the resources and intentions to fight for the preservation and improvement of this key institution, which is of fundamental importance for our social cohesion and development," stated the Publishers/Editors Association in BiH.
