Air Pollution Rising: Citizens Urged to Reduce Car Usage

Following weekend rainfall accompanied by wind, the level of air pollution has significantly decreased, but the concentrations of pollutants in the air are rising again, especially in basin areas, population and industrial centers, writes the Patria News Agency.

Canton or municipal governments will act in accordance with the Rulebooks on Measures to Reduce Excessive Pollution and, if the conditions defined by these documents are met, declare special states (readiness or alert).

The expected development of the meteorological situation in our country in the next two days favors an increase in concentrations compared to today's values.

On Thursday, January 15, a destabilization of the atmosphere is expected, accompanied by weak winds and precipitation, which will have a limited impact on reducing pollution. Significant changes in meteorological conditions that will cause significant air purification in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina can only be expected next weekend.

The main reasons for increased pollution are: geographical conditions for the formation of an atmospheric inversion layer as a medium for pollutant accumulation; industry and energy (primarily thermal power plants, coking plants, steel mills); households (heating with coal); traffic (poor traffic infrastructure, high emissions from older vehicles).

Citizens are asked to reduce their car usage and burning of low-quality fuels in the coming days, according to their needs and possibilities.
