1.3 million KM planned for non-invasive prenatal testing co-financing program in 2026

(Patria) - The Government of Sarajevo Canton confirms its strong commitment to the health of future generations by continuously strengthening the co-financing program for non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). This measure, established in 2024, yields measurable results and provides essential security for families in Sarajevo Canton.

In order to enhance the accessibility of this crucial service, the Health Insurance Fund (ZZO KS), as the implementer of the Government's decision, has allocated funds in the amount of 1,100,000 KM for 2025, while an increase in the budget to 1,300,000 KM is planned for 2026. Thus, the Government of Sarajevo Canton systematically supports programs that have a direct impact on the health of mothers and the security of families.

The Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton, Nihad Uk, emphasized that the budget growth is a direct response from the Government to the needs of citizens and the result of a clear strategy.

"When we introduced NIPT co-financing in 2024, we had one goal that is most important to us: to alleviate uncertainty and provide the greatest possible security for our pregnant women and their children. There is no greater happiness, nor a greater priority for us as a Government, than a healthy start to life. Therefore, we proudly emphasize that family health is our greatest value," stated Prime Minister Uk.

Data on the processing of refund requests clearly show the necessity of this systemic support. In 2024 (the year co-financing was established), 502 decisions were recorded for NIPT refunds, while in 2025, as of November, 797 decisions have been recorded.

This significant increase in the number of decisions confirms the effectiveness of the measure and the direct positive impact of the Government of Sarajevo Canton on the quality of healthcare.

ZZO KS co-finances the costs of the test in the amount of 90% of the actually incurred costs, up to a maximum of 1,250 KM per request.

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a key diagnostic procedure that, through a simple blood sample from the mother, allows for early and safe detection of the risk of fetal chromosomal disorders. By introducing co-financing, Sarajevo Canton has ensured that this crucial, yet expensive, diagnostics is available to insured persons from risk categories.

A request for co-financing can be submitted by the insured person or their spouse/partner.

The necessary documentation, including the report from the attending specialist physician, is available on the ZZO KS website. The Government of Sarajevo Canton and ZZO KS continue with activities aimed at providing the best possible healthcare to all citizens, with a special emphasis on pregnant women.
