24-hour monitoring of landslide-threatened areas at Curine njive and Bistrički potok sites

(Patria) - The Municipal Civil Protection Headquarters of Stari Grad organized 24-hour monitoring of the terrain in landslide-threatened areas, at the Curine njive and Bistrički potok sites, aiming for early warning of the endangered population and their potential evacuation. Employees of the Civil Protection Service of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo and members of the protection and rescue services of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo, upon visiting the mentioned locations on January 9, 2025, determined the following situation:

Site “Curine njive” – Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad and Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo (Bostarići)

Upon visiting the site on January 9, 2025 (during the day and night), it was observed that deep cracks are still present in the terrain and that water is flowing from above the “Curine njive-playground” site (part of the Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad Sarajevo).

No water seepage or constant inflow of water into the landslide body was observed in the upper part of the deposited material/embankment. No constant water flows were noted on the affected terrain. A temporary, unnamed stream has slightly cut into the central and lower parts of the slope/embankment, and in a short section of a few meters, it disappears by infiltrating into the cracks of the landslide body. Previous measurements of the amount of water appearing on the eastern flank of the deposited material/embankment measured 2.2 l/min (measurements performed by experts from “Rudarski Institut” d.d. Tuzla for the investor “Park ruža” d.o.o. Tuzla). Water seepage in the western part of the landslide, directly below the embankment, cannot be precisely determined. This water penetrates the landslide body and weakens the soil's resistance characteristics along the slip surface (it is assumed to originate from underground captures that are under pressure from the earth or construction material from the embankment). Due to snowmelt at the site, a larger amount of water has appeared, which is disappearing by infiltrating into the cracks of the landslide body.

Site “Knjeginjac” – Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad

Upon visiting the “Knjeginjac” site on January 9, 2025, employees of the Civil Protection Service of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo determined that no new quantities of earth and stone material are being deposited at this site, nor are any construction works being carried out. It was also determined that the Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad had previously installed some metal posts and protective fencing intended to prevent any new deposition of earth and stone material. No new construction or other material deposits are visible at the landfill near the construction site of the “Trebević Hills” facility.

Site “Bistrički potok” – Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo and Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad

At the Bistrički potok site, which extends across the area of the Municipality of Stari Grad and the Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad, a partial blockage of the stream bed with material from the landfill, collapsed trees, and previously cut trees has been observed. There are no new collapses of material or trees, nor removal of previously deposited materials. Due to snowfall, it is not possible to precisely determine the current state of the stream bed.

4) Order of the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton on the evacuation of the population from the threatened area of the Municipality of Stari Grad, number: 08-40-1128-2/24 dated November 1, 2024, and number: 08-40-1128-2.1/24 dated November 20, 2024

Acting on the Order of the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton on the evacuation of the population from the threatened area of the Municipality of Stari Grad, number: 08-40-1128-2/24 dated November 1, 2024, employees of the Civil Protection Service of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo regularly patrol residential buildings and citizens in Bostarići, Ablakovina, and Ablakovina čikma streets.

In accordance with the Plan for the evacuation and accommodation of the population in case of an assessment that natural or other disasters may occur or that a state of natural or other disaster has been declared in the area of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo – MZ “Širokača” locality, Bostarići and Ablakovina streets, number: 12-40-222-87/24 dated October 30, 2024, and the Amendments to the Plan for the evacuation and accommodation of the population in case of an assessment that natural or other disasters may occur or that a state of natural or other disaster has been declared in the area of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo – MZ “Širokača” locality, Bostarići and Ablakovina streets, number: 12-40-222-96/24 dated November 6, 2024, adopted by the Municipal Civil Protection Headquarters of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo, employees of the Civil Protection Service and the Service for Local Community Affairs of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo are undertaking further activities for the accommodation of the population from the threatened area in available accommodation units secured through the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo.

Acting on the Order of the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton on the evacuation of the population from the threatened area of the Municipality of Stari Grad, number: 08-40-1128-2/24 dated November 1, 2024, and Order number: 08-40-1128-2.1/24 dated November 20, 2024, the Municipal Civil Protection Headquarters of Centar Sarajevo and Novi Grad Sarajevo, as well as the civil protection services of the mentioned municipalities, provided necessary expert support to the Civil Protection Service of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo on January 9, 2025, as part of their regular activities.
