Duchess of Edinburgh to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina on the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide

(Patria) - The Duchess of Edinburgh will visit Bosnia and Herzegovina from 10 to 12 July 2025 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

During the visit, the Duchess will attend the central commemoration at the Srebrenica Memorial Centre in Potočari on 11 July, where she will read a message on behalf of King Charles III. She will also lay a flower of remembrance at the cemetery and speak with members of the Mothers of Srebrenica association.

During her stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Duchess will meet with members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, religious leaders and representatives of civil society to discuss the legacy of the war, three decades after its end.

A visit is also planned to the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which operates above entity divisions in the search for persons missing from the war of the 1990s. The Duchess will also meet with survivors of wartime sexual violence – an issue of great importance to the United Kingdom, which has for many years provided support to survivors, both on the international stage and through direct initiatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During the visit, the Duchess will also speak with commanders of NATO forces and EUFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina to thank them for their contribution to preserving peace and security in the country.

This is the first official visit of Her Royal Highness to Bosnia and Herzegovina. We recall that in March 2021, she participated in a virtual meeting with survivors from Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of the British Initiative for Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict. The last visit by a member of the British royal family was in July 2015, when Princess Anne attended the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.
