In order to save money and support the budget, the Austrian army is selling the Martinek barracks in Lower Austria online, setting a starting price of 33.1 million euros for the buyer, Austrian media report, as relayed by the BH News Agency Patria.
The advertisement was published on the Austrian portal willhaben.at, by the state-owned company specialized in real estate sales, SIVBEG. This company has sold 141 properties to date, earning 262.4 million euros for the state.
Since 2006, SIVBEG has been selling military properties that the army no longer uses. Among the properties sold are, in addition to barracks, residences of military attachés abroad, as well as ammunition depots, training grounds, and shooting ranges.
Incidentally, the Martinek barracks in Baden was also mentioned as accommodation for asylum seekers before it was put up for sale in October. It comprises 50 state-protected buildings.
The barracks cover an area of 40 hectares and have 100,000 square meters of already built facilities.
The Austrian government has decided to sell another 30 properties owned by the army.
