The failed coup attempt in Turkey cost the country at least 300 billion lira ($99.9 billion) in damages, according to the Minister of Customs and Trade Bulent Tufenkci, Hurriyet newspaper writes, reports the Patria News Agency.
The damages include destroyed buildings, military equipment, a drop in foreign orders, and a decline in tourism, the minister told reporters in Ankara.
The plotters who attempted the coup tried to portray Turkey as a "third-world country," the minister said, specifically pointing to footage of tanks in the streets during the night of the coup attempt. Despite this, the local economy has shown resilience, including the rapid reopening of the stock exchange.
The Turkish lira has also seen a recovery. At the height of concerns caused by the coup attempt, the lira fell from 2.87 to the dollar to 3.09. It is now slightly below 3 lira to the dollar. Standard and Poor's rating agency downgraded Turkey's rating after the coup, Index writes.
