Myanmar authorities block humanitarian aid for Rohingya

Myanmar authorities have blocked humanitarian aid sent by the UN to members of the Rohingya people in the country, reports the Patria agency.

- We are unable to distribute humanitarian aid. We are in contact with Myanmar authorities to ensure the continuation of operations – the head of the UN office in the country told the British Guardian.

The authorities of this predominantly Buddhist country have been carrying out ethnic cleansing against members of the Rohingya Muslim community in recent days.

According to estimates by non-governmental organizations, over 150,000 people have left their homes and fled to neighboring Bangladesh.

The Myanmar government claims this is a response to a Rohingya insurgency, while international human rights activists emphasize that it is ethnic cleansing, and some even consider it genocide.

Several Nobel Peace Prize laureates have launched a campaign in recent days to strip Myanmar's Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi of the Nobel Peace Prize she received in 1991 for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights.

For years, Aung San Suu Kyi lived under house arrest and was abused by the military junta, but since coming to power, she has never raised her voice against the violence against the Rohingya.
