More than 7,000 civilians evacuated from eastern Aleppo

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced via Twitter that "more than 7,000 civilians have been evacuated from eastern Aleppo in the first 5 convoys", according to world media, reports Patria.

The UN claims that about 50,000 more civilians are trapped in Aleppo.

The evacuation of the last rebel stronghold in Aleppo began on Thursday as part of a ceasefire brokered by Turkey and Russia. This ended years of fighting for the city and marked a major victory for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian army, supported by Russia, has taken almost all parts of the city held by rebels.

America has accused the Syrian government of being behind "nothing less than a massacre" in Aleppo.

- The question remains whether the Syrian regime, with its Russian ally, is willing to go to Geneva for constructive negotiations, and whether they are prepared to stop the slaughter of their own population, said US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Syria and Russia have repeatedly denied claims that they targeted the civilian population.

The Syrian President on Thursday welcomed the "liberation" of Aleppo after more than 4 years of fighting for the city, saying that "history has been made".
