UN Security Council unanimously adopts new sanctions against North Korea

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted new sanctions against North Korea after the sixth and strongest nuclear test conducted by the country on September 3, world media report, citing the Patria agency.

The UN Security Council imposed a ban on textile exports and a restriction on crude oil imports on North Korea.

This is the ninth resolution on sanctions against North Korea that has been unanimously passed by the 15-member Council since 2006, related to its ballistic and nuclear program.

The United States softened the initial text of the resolution to gain the support of Pyongyang's allies, China and Russia.

Textile exports were the second largest export in North Korea in 2016, after coal and other minerals, generating a value of 752 million US dollars, according to data from the relevant North Korean agency. Close to 80 percent of these exports go to China.

The resolution also bans condensed and liquefied natural gas, limits processed oil products to 2 million barrels annually, and caps oil imports at the current level. North Korea is primarily supplied with oil by China.

According to an unnamed US official close to the negotiations within the Council, North Korea imports about 4.5 million barrels of refined oil products annually and 4 million barrels of crude oil.
