(Patria) – One of the largest coronavirus infection clusters in Japan is linked to a day care center for the elderly in the city of Nagoya, highlighting the difficulty of protecting this segment of the population in a country with the world's oldest population.
Elderly people are among the most vulnerable categories of the population when it comes to the coronavirus. In other countries like the USA and Australia, elderly care centers are also linked to infection clusters.
Nagoya is the capital of Aichi prefecture, which is the second most affected region in Japan, with 123 cases of infection. All 14 deaths in Japan occurred precisely in that part of the country.
50 cases linked to the elderly care center have been hospitalized.
Part of the cluster in the same area is linked to a local gym, while the largest group of cases was recorded in the Osaka area with more than 50 people linked to a venue where music concerts were held.
Japan has so far recorded a total of 821 coronavirus cases and 28 fatal outcomes. This number does not include the number of Japanese citizens who were on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which has been docked in Yokohama for weeks.
When the situation on the cruise ship is taken into account, the total number of infected people is 1,547, with 35 deaths, Reuters reports.
