United Kingdom: Number of deaths doubles, government tightens measures

(Patria) – The death toll from the coronavirus in the United Kingdom has nearly doubled in the last 24 hours.

Another 10 infected patients belonging to risk groups have died; all suffered from chronic illnesses or disorders – eight men and two women ranging in age from 70+ to 90 years.

This brings the total number of deaths from the coronavirus in the United Kingdom to 21, while the total number of infected stands at 1,140, although unofficial sources mention a figure of 10,000.

The British government has faced criticism over its approach to the emergency, particularly after Prime Minister Johnson's statement that many families must prepare for losses.

The government's approach, which can be characterised as a strategy of herd immunity where it is expected that around 60% of the population will be infected and then become immune, was also criticised by WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris.

Following the criticism, the government made a U-turn and on Friday announced a ban on gatherings, although schools remain open.

The youngest victim of the infection is a newborn in London, to whom the virus was transmitted by the mother, who had been hospitalised several days before giving birth due to suspected pneumonia, which later turned out to be the coronavirus.

The public is reminded daily that every individual plays a key role and that they should stay at home.

In the United Kingdom, a total of 37,746 people have been tested, with 36,606 testing negative, reports The Guardian.
