Great Britain: Central commemoration for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide

Around 100 different events will be held in Great Britain to mark the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, and today a central commemoration will be held at Westminster Abbey for the victims of the genocide, attended by British Prime Minister David Cameron, writes the BBC, reports the BH News Agency Patria.

Ahead of the commemoration, Cameron said that people must never forget what happened. Around 2,000 guests are expected at today's event, who will light candles in memory of the fallen. One of the guests will be the president of the Association of Mothers of Srebrenica, Munira Subašić, who will share her story.

A commemorative event will also be held in Cardiff on Wednesday, hosted by the First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones.

The First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, will also hold a commemoration at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh on Friday.

Princess Royal will travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday to attend the commemoration in Srebrenica.

Also, on Sunday, a tribute to the victims of Srebrenica will be held in Belfast as part of Remembrance Week.

A special session will be held in both Houses of Parliament.

Cameron said that Great Britain must reaffirm its determination to prevent genocide in the future.

One of the speakers will be the former High Representative for BiH, Lord Paddy Ashdown, who said that Srebrenica should be remembered not only to bear witness to suffering but also as a warning of what happens when one turns their back.
