Vehabović: Solutions with divisions are difficult to achieve, elections must be held

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Judge of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg Faris Vehabović commented on the failed negotiations on the election law, saying he had expected it.

- I am not at all surprised by the outcome of the talks. This shows that there was no negotiation strategy that could have led to a successful conclusion of the talks. It is evident that there is not even a minimum of mutual trust that could serve as a good basis for serious talks.

Vehabović claims that any solution to the election law is possible, even one involving the division of the country into three parts, but adds that it is quite another matter whether that solution is acceptable to all and what the content of that division would be.

 When you say a country of three parts, does that mean one part is the Republika Srpska, and the other two parts are to be created from the Federation of BiH, or would it mean creating three multi-ethnic regions on the territory of BiH, or, for example, the proposal of the Bishops' Conference, which is also based on creating regions within BiH? Of course, each of the possibilities of division creates opposition on one or two sides, and thus a solution based on divisions seems realistically difficult to achieve, but theoretically possible, said Vehabović.

Nevertheless, regardless of the failed negotiations, Vehabović believes that elections will be held this year with or without certain political actors because holding elections is a legal obligation, said Vehabović.
