Fire near Ston crosses main road, Pelješac cut off from mainland

On Korčula, the situation is worst in the area of Brna Bay and the eastern part of the Smokvica Municipality. Around noon, the wind picked up and the situation worsened again, reports the Patria news agency.  

-I said this morning that this could all be contained today, but I was obviously wrong. We don't know what the afternoon or night will bring, says Smokvica Mayor Lenko Salečić for Dubrovački dnevnik.

The fire near Ston, as reported by RTL, crossed the main road and practically cut off Pelješac from the mainland. Due to the fire, the road across Pelješac near Ponikve is also closed. The houses in Ponikve itself are not threatened, although the fire is moving towards them, but the hamlet of Zabrđe is in danger, where firefighters are trying to defend the houses. Two helicopters are on the ground assisting in the extinguishing efforts.
