Emergency session of the European Parliament: Zelenskyy asks for Europe's support, receives a big applause

(Patria) - The emergency session of the EU Parliament on the invasion of Ukraine has begun, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressed the chamber. The EP hall is full of Ukrainian flags. 

In an emotional address, he said that the largest square in Europe, Freedom Square in Kharkiv, was hit yesterday by two Russian missiles and that many people were killed. "Every main square in our country will be called 'Freedom Square'. They will not break us, we are Ukrainians," he said. 

"Prove that you are with us, that you will not let us go, prove that you are Europeans. And then life will defeat death, and light will defeat darkness. Glory to Ukraine," he said, after which he received a huge round of applause. 

The President of the Ukrainian Parliament said that no one knows where the Russian aggression will stop.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, also addressed the chamber, stating that the European Council will have to consider Ukraine's request for accession to the European Union.

"Vladimir Putin thought when he announced this war that he would break Europe. When he took action, he thought he would quickly break Ukraine, but he was wrong. We must stand firmly with Ukraine and against aggression," he said.  

The High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, addressed the European Parliament.

"This is a moment when we become aware that a nuclear attack is being threatened for the first time since World War II. Russia has begun to feel the consequences of the sanctions. The assets of the Russian Central Bank have been frozen," Borrell said.

The European Parliament approved Ukraine's request for accession to the European Union. A special admission procedure has been initiated. The vote will be held at 4:30 PM.
