Interior designers encounter everything - good, bad, and even strange. And while some mistakes are obvious, others are more subtle, but they still can't escape a designer's trained eye. Some of our favorite designers and interior gurus have shared their 'favorite mistakes' with us, from curtain length to excessive decor, writes Vogue magazine, reports the BH news agency Patria.
Here are 10 mistakes you should correct in the new year. Small, subtle touches that will have a big impact on your living space.
1. Over-decorating. It's important to create visual breaks in rooms to create quiet moments – Ann Haagenson, designer
2. Too many different materials in the same space! I'm a minimalist when it comes to materials. Reducing the material palette is key to a clean, timeless look. – Don Stewart, designer
3. What I notice immediately is that people are afraid to take risks at home. They play it safe and feel paralyzed by too many choices, and then their house ends up looking like a cookie cutter without personality. I think it's important to try different things when decorating your own home. Paint a wall a crazy color! Hang a huge painting you bought cheaply on the street. If you're tired of how something looks, change it! I like to think of a home as a wet canvas; the process of decorating a home never stops. If you mess up and it looks terrible, you've learned something, haven't you? The end result should reflect your personality. – Justina Blakeney, designer, artist, author
4. Curtains hung too low. You should hang them as close to the ceiling as possible – this will make the ceiling appear higher. – Katie Hodges, interior designer
5. People think they need to furnish small spaces with small furniture – in reality, it's the opposite. Volume will trick the eye and fill the space, making it more expressive. – Maria Brito, interior designer, author
6. I don't find it interesting when an interior is entirely classically decorated or modernly decorated. It must be a mix of styles to make the space interesting and attractive. – Sara Story, designer
7. I don't like it when there's nowhere to put down a drink! It frustrates me when extreme design and beauty lack function. – Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe, interior designers
8. The biggest mistake is buying everything from one store or one collection. This leads to an uninspired, uncreative interior. Instead, take the time to explore antique shops and stores that sell vintage art and mix it all up. It may take more time and effort, but your reward will be the result. – Sasha Bikoff, interior designer
9. People underestimate the impact of rug size. A small rug will make the room feel smaller and unbalanced. Chairs at the dining table should not extend beyond the edges of the rug when pulled out. When planning a rug for a specific room, we usually measure 15-30 cm from the wall. – Anne Hepfer, interior designer
10. Fear of change and breaking rules. Sometimes 'mistakes' turn into the best design moments. Decide what you want to feel in the room, and then let the design evolve from that idea. – Kelly Wearstler, designer
