URA: While we are in power, Mladić will not get a street; such attempts undermine the new government

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The Civic Movement URA reacted to the decision of the Council for Proposing Names of Settlements, Streets and Squares of the Municipality of Berane that one of the streets in that city be named after Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, who was convicted of genocide in Srebrenica.

"We strongly condemn this decision by the Council and expect the Municipal Assembly of Berane to reject this proposal. URA will not allow any war criminal, advocate of fascist ideology, or person convicted of serious criminal offenses to have the honor of having any street named after them in Montenegro," said URA Executive Director Zoran Mikić on this occasion.

As he pointed out, URA will promote the idea of a civic, reconciled, anti-fascist, and secular Montenegro.

"With this proposal, the Council for Proposing Names of Settlements, Streets and Squares of the Municipality of Berane has grossly violated the provisions of the Law on Memorials in Montenegro, primarily Article 10 of the said law, which clearly stipulates that it is not permitted to erect any memorial to a person convicted of a crime against humanity or other goods protected by international law, or declared a war criminal. In addition to this article, the Council also violated Article 9 of the same law, which stipulates that a memorial to a prominent person cannot be erected before the expiration of 20 years from the date of the person's death. Exceptionally, with the prior consent of the Government of Montenegro, a memorial to a prominent person may be erected before the expiration of the period from paragraph 2 of the same article," Mikić specifies.

The Executive Director of URA emphasized that the party expects all colleagues in the new ruling majority to defend universal civic and anti-fascist values.

"Anyone who tries to 'push' such initiatives is directly working to undermine the new government and helping the DPS. We are sure that one street is not more important than the fight for a reconciled, civic, European, democratic, and better society. The fight against corruption and organized crime and the complete dismantling of the DPS regime should be priorities for all of us, not national issues and such scandalous proposals," Mikić concludes.
