UNSA Hosts Summer Program 'Comparative Public Health: Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina'

(Patria) - Students from the prestigious Northwestern University in the state of Illinois in the United States of America will be staying at the University of Sarajevo again this year as part of a summer school program called “Comparative Public Health: Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina”.

The program, which has been successfully implemented for many years in cooperation with Northwestern, the University of Belgrade, and the University of Sarajevo, continues during July and August 2025, offering a rich content focused on familiarizing participants with Bosnia and Herzegovina's past, cultural diversity, contemporary socio-political relations, as well as the functioning of the healthcare system.

A special focus of the program remains on post-conflict societal challenges, confronting the past, and the role of educational and health institutions in building peace and trust. The summer school represents an important segment of Northwestern's broader and globally recognized “Global Education” program, and its continuous implementation with the support of the teaching staff of the University of Sarajevo, university services, and non-governmental organizations confirms a strong partnership and mutual trust that is further strengthened year after year.

The program includes interactive lectures, practical workshops, visits to museums, memorial centers, galleries, healthcare facilities, and therapeutic communities, as well as two professional excursions throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through these activities, students have the opportunity to directly experience the richness of the country's cultural and historical diversity, as well as the complex forms of war and post-war trauma from the 1990s.

After their stay in Belgrade, the American students continue the program in Sarajevo, where through their multi-week stay, they explore the layered identities of Bosnia and Herzegovina through the prism of language, culture, and contemporary social trends. This program in 2025 again represents an opportunity for the University of Sarajevo to affirm its commitment to international cooperation and academic excellence, in partnership with Northwestern University – a globally recognized educational institution whose activities are carried out on all continents and which is regularly ranked among the most reputable universities in the world.
