Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina marks 70 years of existence, holds 6,000 exhibits

The Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina marks seventy years of existence in 2016. As part of this, a banner with the Decree on its establishment from 1946 has been placed on the facade of the Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

Namely, the Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina was founded as the Art Gallery in Sarajevo by a Decree of the Government of the People's Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, signed on 11 October 1946 by the Prime Minister Rodoljub Čolaković and the Minister of Education Cvijetin Mijatović. The Decree on establishment defined the status of the Art Gallery, sources of funding and its tasks in seven short points. Since 1969, it has officially been named the Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina still respects the tasks defined by the founding Decree, which stipulates that it should “collect and purchase works of our and foreign visual artists, and through exhibiting these works and organising exhibitions on the territory of BiH, influence the development of art and familiarise the people with visual art”.

The execution of these tasks is evidenced by the fact that the initial core of the Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina's collection had 600 exhibits, while today it preserves over 6,000. In addition to acquisitions, the Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina regularly organises exhibitions presenting various segments of its holdings.

The anniversary of the Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be marked throughout the year through various exhibitions and activities, about which you will be informed.
