Leptospirosis epidemic lifted in Sarajevo Canton, a total of 119 cases confirmed

(Patria) - At the proposal of the Public Institution Institute for Public Health of Sarajevo Canton, the Minister of Health of Sarajevo Canton issued an Order to declare the end of the leptospirosis epidemic in the area of Sarajevo Canton.

The epidemic was declared on May 15, 2025, and during its duration, a total of 119 cases were recorded. The highest number of cases was recorded in the municipality of Novi Grad – a total of 80 cases.

According to data, among the cases in the age group of 40 to 49 years, a total of 39 cases were registered, of which 27 were men and 12 were women.

In the previous period, the Institute for Public Health of Sarajevo Canton, in cooperation with healthcare institutions, inspection services and local self-government units, continuously conducted epidemiological surveillance and issued recommendations for implementing necessary measures, thereby creating conditions for declaring the end of the epidemic.

This event once again reminds that infectious diseases still represent a real public health risk. Timely reporting of diseases, implementation of protective measures and responsible community behavior are key to preventing the spread of infections. The Institute for Public Health of Sarajevo Canton will continue to continuously monitor the epidemiological situation and issue recommendations aimed at protecting and improving the health of the population.

Given that preparatory activities are underway for the start of the autumn phase of preventive systematic deratization in the entire area of Sarajevo Canton, citizens are asked to follow the instructions of the competent utility services, building managers and representatives of apartment owners in order to create all sanitary and hygienic conditions for its implementation, with the aim of better efficiency of the deratization process itself, and for the purpose of protecting the health of the population of Sarajevo Canton.
