UKC RS: 22-year-old infected with both coronavirus and flu

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - In the sample of a patient hospitalized at the University Clinical Center of Republika Srpska, an infection with influenza, RNA Influenza A (H3), and coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was detected simultaneously today.

This is the first case of simultaneous infection with these two viruses detected so far in Republika Srpska. The patient was born in 2000 and is from Banja Luka. He is currently conscious, and hemodynamically and respiratorily stable, the UKC RS announced.

"The Institute for Clinical Microbiology of the University Clinical Center of Republika Srpska has the capability for simultaneous detection of over 20 diagnostic parameters for the most common viral and bacterial respiratory tract infections using the BIOFIRE FILMARRAY SYSTEMS (Biomerieux) device, within one hour. This significantly speeds up diagnostics and contributes to the quality of service. We are currently the only institution in Republika Srpska with this diagnostic capability," the UKC RS announced.

This health institution emphasizes that such a finding confirms the circulation of both viruses in the population, and the possibility of simultaneous infection caused by influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2, as has already been confirmed in other countries.
