UK: Canton takes over landslide remediation, will not wait for authorities

(Patria) - KS Prime Minister Nihad Uk, along with the Advisory Group, representatives of the Civil Protection of the Municipality of Stari Grad, the Faculty of Forestry, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Institute for Civil Engineering and the Institute for Construction of KS visited the landslide in the Curini njiva area.

A tour was also conducted of the start of works on the remediation of the landfill on the upper side of Trebević.

- The Sarajevo Canton is coordinating all activities related to the remediation of this landslide - stated Uk during today's visit to the site.

He also stated that the Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad contributed to the occurrence of this landslide through its negligence.

- We are aware that they do not have the financial, technical, and human capacities to respond to this challenge, but we believe they should have called for assistance from the Civil Protection of RS, the Federation of BiH, and the Ministry of Security of BiH, which is the main coordinating body for such situations.

Unfortunately, after several joint meetings, nothing concrete has been done, which is why we decided to take initiatives ourselves within our capabilities and jurisdiction to prevent a scenario similar to the one in Jablanica - added Uk.



Benchmarks have been placed on the ground to monitor soil movement, and access for construction machinery to the work sites is being secured. Excavations will begin tomorrow to determine the depths at which the landslides start.

- The situation would be significantly easier if the authorities had taken the necessary measures in time. Although we requested and warned these institutions, there was no timely reaction - emphasizes Uk.

He also states that the Sarajevo Canton has a significant task ahead, which includes soil probing and preparing a report based on the obtained results.

- The Faculty of Civil Engineering has already started designing and preparing for works that would provide a long-term solution for soil stabilization at this location. We will be able to start more serious work only in May, when the ground completely dries after the snow and rain periods.
