Fire on the minaret of the Husejnija Mosque extinguished, suspected arson

(Patria) - The fire that broke out today on the minaret of the Husejnija Mosque in Gradačac has been extinguished, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Local media in Gradačac report that the fire was set after the afternoon prayer and that the police are searching for a person who was in the mosque and then left.

Smoke spread to the rest of the mosque, and a thorough cleaning and renovation of the mosque will follow.

In 2004, the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared the architectural ensemble – the Husejnija (Husein-kapetan Gradaščević) Mosque in Gradačac a national monument.

The national monument consists of the mosque, the ablution area, the library, and the cemetery with tombstones and entrance gates.
