(Patria) - The Association "Žena Podrinja" issued a press release after the BiH Court handed down a first-instance verdict to Milan Trišić for crimes committed during the aggression against BiH and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
"The Municipality of Bratunac, located in eastern Bosnia, was completely destroyed during the summer of 1992 by the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) and other formations involved in ethnic cleansing. During that year, the entire Bosniak population was expelled, killed, or imprisoned in camps.
Trišić stands out as one of the perpetrators of heinous crimes in the Bratunac area.
However, the first-instance panel of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina imposed a meager sentence that is not satisfactory for the victims. Therefore, we appeal to the Appellate Panel to understand the pain of the victims and the horror of the crimes that occurred in Bratunac and to reconsider the imposed sentence. We hope that the second-instance verdict will be significantly higher, reflecting the seriousness and brutality of the committed crimes.
A criminal who does not admit his crimes and refuses to provide information about mass graves of the murdered must be subjected to the strictest penalties," stated the Association, headed by Šuhra Sinanović.
As stated in the press release from the BiH Court, the accused was found guilty of, in the period from April to the end of October 1992, in the area of the Municipality of Bratunac, during the armed conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as part of a widespread and systematic attack by the army and police of the Serbian Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and later Republika Srpska, directed against the civilian Bosniak population of the Municipality of Bratunac, knowing about such an attack and that his actions were part of that attack, as a member of the Bratunac Territorial Defense (TO), and later the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) Bratunac Brigade VP 7042, together with other members of the TO, VRS, Bratunac Public Security Station, and members of paramilitary units, with discriminatory intent, carried out the persecution of the civilian population of Bosniak nationality on national, ethnic, and religious grounds from the area of the village of Hranča and the town of Bratunac, through deprivation of life, enforced disappearance, and other inhumane acts of a similar nature committed with the intent of causing great suffering or serious bodily or psychological injury or impairment of health.
