Gazi Husrev-begova Madrasa students cleaned up trash from City Hall to Kozija ćuprija

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The largest one-day action to clean up illegal waste dumps was carried out today in the Alley of Ambassadors, initiated by the administration and students of Gazi Husrev-begova Madrasa.

From the park near the City Hall, along the Alley of Ambassadors, to Kozija ćuprija, students and their professors cleaned up waste and deposited it at designated locations from where it will be removed by employees of the Department for Roadside Maintenance of the Old Town Municipality.

The municipal mayor Ibrahim Hadžibajrić and the director of Gazi Husrev-begova Madrasa, hafiz Mensur ef. Malkić, joined the students and professors, praising the students' efforts and work.

“These young people can serve as an example of how to care for nature and the environment. We are grateful to them for carrying out this action in our municipality, and I hope that citizens' awareness about waste disposal will be raised. The situation in the Alley of Ambassadors is much better since the introduction of video surveillance at the entrances to this location,” said the municipal mayor Ibrahim Hadžibajrić.

The school director, hafiz Malkić, emphasized that he is proud of the students and professors. “This is one of a series of actions carried out by our students and professors, thanks to the work of our ecology club. With the arrival of spring, they have intensified their activities, and today, 480 of our students were working in the Alley of Ambassadors,” said hfz Malkić.

Professor and head of the ecology club, Merzuk Đulan, stated that this is the largest environmental volunteer project in their school. “The goal of the action is to raise awareness about the creation and importance of responsible waste management in order to preserve the environment, nature, and planet Earth, which is our common good. Until now, it was the practice for one or two classes to participate in the action, but this time almost all students participated, along with the professors,” said Đulan.

Džalila Kukan, Emina Berbić, Amina Kozlić, and Lamija Nezirević are third-year students and say they joined this action with enthusiasm. They recounted how they have participated in similar actions several times before, removing waste left by irresponsible citizens in various locations. These seventeen-year-old girls say that after high school, they plan to enroll in the Faculty of Islamic Sciences or the Faculty of Philosophy.

Emin Zukić is also a third-year student and participated in the environmental action. “This is my first time participating in such an action, and I am glad to be here today. It is not right to dispose of waste like this, and we really need to appeal to the citizens’ awareness,” said Emin. His colleague Ahmed Šadinlija pointed out that this is a great action, and that he has participated in similar activities before.

Students of Gazi Husrev-begova Madrasa have participated in similar actions before, regularly support the “Let's do it – let's clean the planet in one day” campaign, afforestation actions, and emphasize that they will continue to act in this way in the future.
