Uborak and Sutina: The first discovered mass grave in BiH still without investigation

MOSTAR, (Patria) - On June 13 and 14, 1992, 114 citizens of Bosniak and Croat nationality were taken from their homes. All were civilians and all were killed next to the city landfill Uborak and at the nearby location Sutina. Most of the citizens were taken from the atomic shelter in the Zalik settlement in Mostar.

These crimes were committed by Serb paramilitary forces, supported by JNA units. These civilians were captured, mistreated, and tortured in the period from the end of May until the execution itself, in the changing room in Vrapčići, in the city morgue, and in the former Spinning Mill. On June 13, 1992, 26 civilians were executed at the Sutina location, while on the night between June 13 and 14, 88 people were killed near the Uborak city landfill.

The victims were buried under layers of garbage at the Uborak landfill. An attempt was made to conceal the crime in this way.

The case concerning this crime was transferred from the Mostar judiciary to Sarajevo, to the Court of BiH. The BiH Prosecutor's Office has not filed any indictment to date.

One of the few who continuously wrote about this crime against his fellow citizens of Mostar was Dr. Suad Ćupina, a karate champion and coach of the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He emphasizes that his fight and the fight of the victims' families for justice and punishment for the perpetrators will last until the judicial institutions start doing their job.

Uborak is still without an investigation, although it was the first discovered mass grave in BiH.
