No More Cyrillic Signs in Vukovar

The Vukovar City Council, by a majority vote on Monday, passed amendments to the city's Statute which do not provide for bilingual signs on city institutions, institutions, squares, and streets in Vukovar, reports the Patria News Agency.

The Statute amendments are intended to comply with last year's Constitutional Court decision for the Vukovar City Council to resolve the issue of bilingualism in that city within a year.

Let us recall that Index yesterday published a recording on which the Deputy Mayor of Vukovar, Marijan Pavliček, and the President of the Vukovar City Council, Igor Gavrić, fervently sang the Ustaše song "Evo zore, evo dana" (Dawn is Breaking, Day is Coming).

Ten councilors from the ruling HDZ-HKS coalition voted for the amendments, with the support of HDSSB councilor Slavica Jelinić, who provided the decisive vote for the adoption of the Statute amendments, while ten councilors from the SDP, SDSS, HNS, and SNS parties voted against or abstained.
