Exhibition 'Mothers' and Installation 'Scarves of Remembrance' Opened at City Hall in Memory of Srebrenica Genocide Victims

(Patria) - As part of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, Sarajevo Mayor Predrag Puharić ceremonially opened the exhibition "Mothers/Majke" and the art installation "Scarves of Remembrance" at City Hall tonight.

- Today, as we open the exhibition 'Mothers' and the installation 'Scarves of Remembrance,' we stand before a silent yet powerful reminder that the truth about Srebrenica is alive. And that it is not just a number, nor a court record.



It is woven into the wrinkles, into the scarves, into the gazes of women who have survived what cannot even be imagined, let alone recounted - Puharić said.

The Mayor, along with Deputy Mayor Mirza Selimbegović, expressed gratitude to artist Nour Hassan from New Zealand, whose portraits of mothers convey emotion - the silence of pain, the strength of love, and the persistence of the fight for justice and dignity.

The exhibition is accompanied by a photobook with stories about the role of the Mothers of Srebrenica in preserving truth and collective memory.



In the same spirit, Puharić emphasized, the installation "Scarves of Remembrance" was created, made from scarves brought from the Potočari Memorial Center to Sarajevo.

They were collected from women from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, the region, but also from all corners of the world - from Turkey to Cuba, from Kenya to European capitals.

- Each donated scarf is an act of solidarity that we deeply appreciate. Solidarity that says we will not accept forgetting, relativization, nor a new cycle of denial - the Mayor of Sarajevo stated.



The City of Sarajevo supported these powerful artistic initiatives, jointly organized in cooperation with the Movement of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves, the Post-Conflict Research Center, and the Sarajevo Information Center on the ICTY.

At this evening's ceremony, speakers included Mirela Bećirović, wife of the BiH Presidency member Denis Bećirović, who donated a scarf on this occasion; Katherine Biering, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to BiH; war heroine Dr. Fatima Klempić-Dautbašić; President and Founder of the Post-Conflict Research Center Velma Šarić; author of the exhibition "Mothers" Nour Hassan; and Dr. Tiffany Fairey from King's College London.



The artistic atmosphere of the evening was completed by the performance of the young talented violinist Alex Mateescu, whose performance further strengthened the message of this exhibition.
