3,306 Workers Dismissed in Tuzla and Sarajevo in January!

According to data from the Employment Bureau of Tuzla Canton, from January 1 to 25 this year, 2,255 people registered with the Bureau after leaving employment. This means that 2,225 people in TC were laid off after the FBiH Government adopted the Decision on the minimum wage of 1,000 KM. The decision came into effect on January 1.

Regarding Sarajevo Canton, the director of the Sarajevo Canton Employment Service, Amina Džonlagić, stated this morning on BHRT that from January 1 to 27, a total of 1,804 people were registered in the unemployment records, of which 1,081 people lost their employment.

The earlier figure of 1,171 newly registered individuals referred to the period from January 3 to 16. Therefore, in just 11 days, an additional 633 people registered.

According to data from the FBiH Tax Administration as of December 31, 2024, there were 551,452 employed persons in the Federation of BiH.

The largest number of employed persons was in Sarajevo Canton with 151,143, followed by Tuzla Canton with 105,487, and third is Zenica-Doboj Canton with 88,225. These three cantons account for more than half of the total employed in the FBiH.

The consequences of the FBiH Government's decision, specifically the unclear plan for employer assistance measures and subsidies, will be shown in the FBiH Tax Administration data at the beginning of February.

Some employers publicly announced dismissals, some decided to close their businesses, while there are also workers who voluntarily ask their employers to dismiss them so that their wages are paid "in an envelope" or that they work illegally.
