Srebrenica Inferno Performed in St. Louis

The Association of Survivors of the Srebrenica Genocide in St. Louis, along with friends and the rest of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community, organized a series of commemorative events in recent days, marking the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. On July 11th, they held a walk in memory of the Srebrenica genocide.

This, the largest open-air commemoration in St. Louis to date, was prepared for several months and led by a group of enthusiasts united by the idea that the Srebrenica genocide must not be forgotten.

During the commemoration, former Congressman Russ Carnahan, one of the founders of the Congressional Caucus for Bosnia and Herzegovina, addressed the attendees. He was, among other things, a driving force in 2005 when Resolution 199 was passed in the U.S. Congress, which for the first time recognized the events in Srebrenica as genocide. Shortly thereafter, Congressman Carnahan led the passage of a resolution calling for amendments to the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition to Congressman Carnahan, attendees were addressed by Missouri State Representative Bob Burns and a representative of the current Congressman from St. Louis, Lacy Clay.

The performance of the Srebrenica Inferno, accompanied by a performance by members of the BH LOYALS fan group of the BH National Team from St. Louis, evoked special emotions. During the performance, they fell down with tied hands and to the sounds of the inferno, forming the Srebrenica Flower.

After the program concluded, several thousand attendees proceeded on a peaceful walk through the streets of St. Louis, paying tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.

American Neighbors Also Expressed Support

Among the several thousand attendees at the commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide, there were a considerable number of Americans. However, what was most touching during the walk were those who decided to come out of their homes at that moment and support their Bosnian neighbors and friends. Many offered simple greetings, but some went a step further, expressing their respect for our community with supportive slogans.
