In Vienna, construction of a large animal shelter is underway. It will provide refuge for 150 dogs and more than 300 cats, as well as smaller pets such as hamsters, rabbits and other small animals. The shelter will cover 9,700 square meters, reports the Patria news agency.
The construction of the shelter for abandoned animals will cost 15 million euros, with the city of Vienna alone investing 10 million for this purpose. To reach the required sum of 15 million, the city has asked citizens and animal protection organizations to help with their donations to speed up the construction of the shelter, more precisely a „modern complex for abandoned animals“.
Interestingly, the new TierQuarTier shelter will not only be suitable for animals but also for the environment. For heating the space and water, energy generated by incinerating materials from a nearby landfill will be used. This landfill, by burning waste, already produces electricity for 3,000 nearby households.
The construction of the shelter is expected to be completed during this year, after which the citizens of Vienna will be able not only to adopt the sheltered dogs but also to come and spend their free time with them.
