100 Bosnians Maintain Giant Clock in Mecca

The giant clock on a skyscraper in Mecca, Islam's holiest city, has been ticking since 2010, and Saudi Arabia boasts that this giant clock shows the official time for the Muslim world, writes the Patria News Agency.

However, it is little known that around 100 workers from Bosnia and Herzegovina are employed in maintaining this clock, NAP reports. This clock has a diameter of 40 meters, which is five times larger than London's Big Ben, and is located on a 577-meter-high tower, which has 76 floors and 76 elevators, with 1,005 guest rooms.

As told to us by a Bosnian IT officer working on clock maintenance in Mecca, some BiH citizens work in the harem, and some on the tower.

Some worked on the construction, and some came later. Generally, the work is like anywhere else, but the earnings are better than what our fellow citizens earn in BiH – says this worker.

The clock, with the inscription "In the name of Allah," is illuminated by 21,000 white and green lights that can be seen from a distance of 30 kilometers and thus calls to prayer five times a day.

Believers are delighted with this impressive building. Something that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world – says our interlocutor.

Incidentally, this project originated in 2008 in Doha when Muslim leaders and scholars met and when "scientific arguments" were presented according to which Mecca is the center of the world.
