(Patria) - In Sarajevo Canton, the period of increased ground-level ozone (O3) concentrations continues, significantly deteriorating air quality. Ground-level ozone is a pollutant gas formed by photochemical reactions from nitrogen oxides (NOX) and volatile organic compounds, with major sources being motor vehicles and industry. Its high concentrations are particularly pronounced during warm and sunny days, and the problem is also present in the region.
Although ozone in the stratosphere (at high altitudes) is crucial for protection against UV radiation, in the ground-level layers of the atmosphere (troposphere) it is an artificial pollutant and a key component of summer smog. It is a colorless to light blue gas with a sweetish odor, formed when sunlight reacts with car exhaust fumes. The highest concentrations are usually recorded in the summer, in the early afternoon hours.
Ozone monitoring in Sarajevo Canton is carried out at automatic stations in Otoka, Hadžići, and at the Saraj Polje location, as well as at measuring devices of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute on Bjelave and Ivan Sedlo. Analyses show a significant number of exceedances of the limit value of 120 micrograms per cubic meter for the eight-hour average.
Exposure to elevated ozone concentrations can cause respiratory problems, especially in sensitive population groups, such as chronic lung and heart patients, the elderly, children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immunity, overweight, and diabetes, as well as worsening existing conditions.
In this regard, the Public Health Institute of Sarajevo Canton has issued recommendations:
* Avoid staying outdoors: During the period from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, avoid prolonged stays outdoors, especially near roads and in urban areas.
* Reduce car use: Use public transport, bicycles, or carpool to reduce emissions.
* Ventilate spaces properly: Ventilate work and living spaces during periods of lowest pollutant concentrations (early morning or late evening).
* Take care of your health: Reduce smoking, spend time in fresh air (in nearby mountains when possible), consume enough fluids, vitamins, and minerals.
* Follow information: Regularly follow announcements from expert institutions regarding air quality.
