Transplant medicine must be improved in BiH

Given that BiH is not a member of Eurotransplant, a large number of citizens whose treatment requires organ transplants not performed in BiH are forced to go abroad. This requires huge financial resources, both from citizens and from health insurance funds that cover part of the costs. The FBiH Ministry of Health told the BiH news agency Patria that activities are already underway in this segment.

- By signing the Protocol on the Procurement and Transplantation of Organs for Treatment Purposes with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia at the end of last year, we opened the door to Eurotransplant, but our primary priority and prerequisite for further improvement of this area is the development of the transplant medicine program in FBiH, on which we are working intensively – the Ministry states.   

This year, a new health insurance law will also be offered, which is actually the fundamental law in this area.

- The law will entail greater centralization in the sense that money follows the patient wherever they are treated in the FBiH, that patient rights are equalized, and that health funds are used more rationally and with better control mechanisms – the Ministry told NAP.

Last year, the project of issuing electronic health cards, i.e., informatization of the health system, began. The Ministry states that this is a fundamental reform within the health sector. The goal is to establish a more efficient and accessible system, reduced waiting times and administrative procedures, as well as rationalization and better control of the consumption of available health funds, which are already insufficient. The legal regulation of the sector also continues.

- By adopting the missing legal and sub-legal acts in accordance with EU directives, I hope that, among other things, the Law on the Treatment of Infertility through Medically Assisted Reproduction will soon be adopted – the Ministry states.
