Peace Park construction begins in the Alley of Ambassadors

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The popular Alley of Ambassadors promenade will soon be complemented by a new feature – a Peace Park.

According to the Sarajevo municipality of Stari Grad, it is a combined park that is a joint project of the Municipality, the Embassy of Sweden in BiH, and UNDP in BiH, and its construction began this week.

The entire park will be built in accordance with its surroundings and will offer citizens a unique oasis for rest and relaxation in the immediate vicinity of the city center.

The park is being built on an area of approximately 1,200 square meters in Dariva, on the site of a devastated children's playground. It will feature furniture for children, including children with disabilities, fitness equipment for recreation, and will be enriched with grass, saplings, ornamental shrubs, flowers, and benches for rest. The park will also serve as a space for contemplation, i.e., relaxation in nature.

The Municipality of Stari Grad, through the Service for Local Development and Local Communities, has obtained all the technical documentation and necessary approvals for the implementation of project activities. The Mayor of the Municipality of Stari Grad, Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, stated that the Municipality of Stari Grad has been continuously investing in the Alley of Ambassadors in recent years to make it a recognizable place for citizens' rest and relaxation.

"In the past period, in cooperation with the competent institutions, we invested about 80,000 KM in the Alley of Ambassadors to stop its devastation. We replaced the entire lighting and installed LED lights on the public lighting poles. We also installed video surveillance, and I can certainly say that vandalism in this location has significantly decreased compared to previous years," stated Hadžibajrić, adding that the Municipality will continue projects in the Alley of Ambassadors.

In addition to infrastructure investments, the Alley is continuously being renewed with new trees through the project of planting linden trees by accredited ambassadors in BiH.

This project, symbolically named "Peace Park," is the result of the successful implementation of the project "Strengthening the Role of Local Communities in BiH," and is financed with 150,000 KM by the Embassy of Sweden in BiH, at the initiative of the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Margot Wallström.

The project is implemented by UNDP in BiH, the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo, and the Cantonal Public Institution for Protected Natural Areas.
