The Turkish election commission has proposed that early parliamentary elections be held on November 1st, following the failure of negotiations to form a coalition government after the June elections, the official Anadolu news agency reported on Thursday, reports the Patria news agency.
The election commission's proposal, which will be presented to political parties before a final decision is made, comes three days before August 23rd, the deadline for forming a coalition government.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu officially returned the mandate to form a government to President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday after failing to find a partner for a coalition government.
The move was expected, as coalition talks between his Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) failed on Monday.
Turkey, a NATO member, has not faced such political instability since the fragile coalition governments of the 1990s. This new political crisis comes at a time when Turkey has taken on an important role in the US campaign against the Islamic State in Syria and while clashes with Kurdish fighters continue on its own territory.
